We are Lawyers for Migrant Communities
Strategic Litigation /
Community Lawyering
We are racialized community members who bring our lived experience, and a critical/intersectional approach to our advocacy efforts in support of systemic change.
We are often consulted by organizations such as the media, unions, non-profits, corporations, Indigenous stakeholders, and the Federal Government to provide advice on how immigration developments and policy may impact them. We write research memos, give presentations, and sit on consultative committees with the aim of improving access to justice and improving immigration law. Community lawyering, for us, means dedicating our time to serve and educate on the areas we work in. One of our major platforms is the use of blogging, writing, and interviewing to speak out against inaction/ineffective Government policies.
Having co-spearheaded the Parent and Grandparent litigation in 2019 while at Edelmann and Co. Law Offices (alongside Lead Counsel, Erin Roth), we recognize the power of utilizing litigation to enact change. We have experiences working with interveners and lead litigants to bring their cases forward for the public good and to change unfair laws. Our practice is shifting intentionally to partnering with third-party organizations looking to effect change through public interest litigation.
A recent example of our strategic litigation and advocacy work is in examining Chinook and Artificial Intelligence – work that has led to the establishment of parliamentary committees and major changes and reviews across the Canadian immigration system. We also are very outspoken about the need for ethical immigration and are advocates for Anti-Racist efforts within this space.
Heron Law Offices is also actively involved in a regular podcast called ImmLight (Immlight of All Circumstances), where we raise awareness about immigration law through story-telling.
