August 26, 2024. Vancouver CityNews 1130. Advocates respond to Canada’s new limit on migrant workers

Our principal immigration lawyer, Will Tao, was quoted in the Vancouver CityNews1130 on August 26 about the new announcement on low-wage temporary foreign workers.

Yesterday, the federal government announced that it will bring back pre-pandemic rules around hiring low-wage temporary foreign workers and is considering reducing annual permanent residency targets. The announcement comes as foreign workers are increasingly being blamed for unaffordable housing and high unemployment.

Canadian Immigration and Refugee Lawyer Wei William (Will) Tao 陶维 said to reporters at CityNews 1130 that foreign workers are not the problem – employer exploitation is – and that limiting the number of foreign workers will not solve the underlying issues. Tao explains this announcement is not surprising, given the upcoming election and the change in public opinion, and that he is skeptical about how much research has been done to support the argument that ‘immigrants are taking Canadian jobs’. “I think that’s a very oversimplified narrative and needs a lot more interrogation,” says Tao.
