Hello all! My name is Torah Lee, and I’m excited to start my journey as the newest articling student at Heron Law Offices.
Although I was born in Calgary, Alberta, my journey has taken me to several places around the world, each of which has shaped my perspective. I spent part of my early childhood in El Paso, Texas, before returning to Calgary. I moved to North Vancouver, BC in high school, which further exposed me to diverse communities and perspectives.
Later, I moved to Victoria, BC, to complete my undergraduate studies at the University of Victoria. I pursued a degree in Anthropology there, which sparked a fascination with how societies and cultures evolve and intersect. My academic interests ignited a curiosity about how law plays a role in shaping social dynamics, particularly in areas like social justice and human rights. This led me to explore how legal systems both reflect and challenge societal norms and structures.
To further immerse myself in the legal field, I worked as a legal assistant for various firms specializing in personal injury, family law, and criminal law before and alongside my studies from 2018 to 2024. These experiences gave me valuable hands-on knowledge and a strong understanding of how different areas of law intersect with the practical aspects of legal practice.
At the onset of the pandemic, I began attending law school online at Bond University in Robina, Australia but was able to attend in person after the travel restrictions eased. During my time there, I particularly enjoyed my advocacy classes, especially those focused on alternative dispute resolution, and developed a strong interest in criminal law. I also volunteered as a peer mentor, which led to a position with a Canadian immigration law firm, sparking my interest in immigration law.
My passion for both criminal law and immigration law found a unique intersection at Heron Law Offices, where I was excited to see the firm’s commitment to taking on “crimmigration” cases—an area blending criminal law and immigration law. This alignment of interests is what drew me to Heron Law Offices and has me eager to contribute to this growing area of practice.
Now, as an articling student at Heron Law Offices, I’m excited to expand my knowledge and develop my skills in immigration law, particularly across its various sectors. I look forward to learning from the diverse range of cases we handle, which will help me build a well-rounded foundation for my future legal career and deepen my expertise in this field.
Outside of the office, I love hiking with my partner and our dog. I’m also an avid fan of motor racing events where my partner drifts and races. In my spare time, I enjoy painting, making pottery, and dancing, but my biggest passion is traveling. I make it a point to visit a new place each year. Over the past couple of years, I’ve had the opportunity to road-trip across Canada to explore more of our beautiful country. I’ve also traveled to Asia, Australia, the USA, and Mexico, and I’m excited to continue exploring the world in the future.
I’m truly thankful for the opportunity to join the team at Heron Law Offices, and I’m eager to contribute, learn, and grow as I embark on this exciting new phase of my legal career.
